To verify insurance eligibility and benefits, calculate patient due amount, and conveys this information to the patient/patient account and clinical staff. To research and understand patients' accounts and be able to communicate this information effectively to patients.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Verifies medical insurance eligibility and benefits for testing and surgical procedures.
- Secures pre-certification for medical services including surgery and testing as required for all of the following: ENT, CT/MRI, Allergy, Audiology, Hearing Aids, Sleep Studies, Office procedure and Scopes.
- Opens case and follows up at least weekly until the 15 day time frame is up and provides records and other information as needed and requested by the payers for pre-certification.
- Communicates insurance information to patients in the clinic and also over the telephone.
- Researches and answers questions from patients about bills and charges.
- Researches rejections for request for referrals and insurance cancellations and re-files bills.
- knowledgeable of and efficiently operates the Company’s practice management system without error.
- Provides patients and insurance companies with records and medical information as required.
- Verifies patients’ Medicaid coverage each month.
- Is responsible for knowing the work schedule, observing work hours and maintaining a good attendance record. (See attached attendance and punctuality requirements.)
- Attends in-service programs.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, patients, customers and the public. Exemplifies the Company’s Five Star Program.
- Follows all corporate and departmental policies and procedures and complies with the Employee Handbook.

DEGREE OF SUPERVISION:
Performs duties under indirect supervision.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Reports directly to the Supervisor of Patient Insurance.
- Must be a graduate of an accredited high school.
- Requires at least 1 year of work experience in a doctor’s office or with medical insurance.
- Must have good manual dexterity for operating office equipment. Must be able to function in an office setting.
- Must be able to transcribe information received from patients, including insurance coverage, social security and telephone numbers without error. Should be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must have basic mathematical skills.
- Physical activity involves typing, writing, reaching, carrying, looking, listening, talking, bending, lifting, standing, walking and much sitting, resulting in light work.
- Light - must be able to lift or carry up to 10 pounds of weight up to 10 feet occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time), or a negligible amount of weight up to 10 feet frequently (from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time). Light work requires sitting most of the time, but may involve periods of standing and walking depending on task requirements.
- Works in an office setting, which is well-lighted, ventilated and temperature regulated. Automobile travel may be required.
- Must be able to concentrate on work tasks amidst distractions, such as noise, conversations and foot traffic.
- Must be able to work in a confined area performing repetitive work for extended periods of time.
- Must have responsible, ethical and professional manner with the ability to listen, learn, plan and organize.
- Must be able to communicate with people of different races, sexes, ages and social classes.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, automobile liability insurance.
