Job Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Genomic Data Scientist to join our team, specializing in microbial genomics within the realm of public health. In this role, you will work closely with public health scientists to assist in the understanding, monitoring, and combating of infectious diseases through genomic data analysis. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career to gain hands-on experience in bioinformatics and make a meaningful impact in public health.
Responsibilities
- Utilize bioinformatics tools and techniques to analyze genomic data of microbes relevant to public health
- Curate and manage genomic databases containing microbial sequences, metadata, and associated epidemiological information in compliance with data privacy and security regulations
- Submit genomic sequence data and accompanying metadata to public repositories such as NCBI and GISAID
- Monitor and delegate technical support requests from public health partners to appropriate team members
- Undertake analysis of datasets using sound scientific principles
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of data scientists, developers, and genomic epidemiologists to meet the bioinformatics needs of the public health community
- Perform any other tasks as required to support the objectives of the team and organization
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, bioinformatics, data science or a related field
- Understanding of molecular biology concepts and genomics technologies (e.g., next-generation sequencing)
- Ability to organize, maintain, and improve databases used for genomic analysis
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Effective communication skills and ability to convey technical concepts to a non-technical audience
- Experience analyzing and interpreting genomic data is a plus, as is prior experience working with public repositories such as NCBI
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $40,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
