POSITION SUMMARY:
A non-exempt position responsible for performing a variety of duties at Southwest Gastroenterology Associates (SWGA). May be involved in both the clinical and administrative areas including assisting physicians with patient care and handling clerical, environmental and organizational tasks. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical services at SWGA. May be assigned to a specific medical specialty department (i.e., triage, rectal banding, Fibroscan or Southwest Endoscopy).
MAJOR DUTIES/CRITICAL TASKS:
Under supervision –
- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow. Accompanying patients to exam or procedure room. Assisting patients with walking, transfers, dressing, vital signs, and preparing for exams. Collecting patient history, performing screening per provider guidelines. Assisting physicians or ACP’s with various procedures. Documentation of patient visit. Relaying instructions to patients and their family. Answering calls and providing pertinent information.
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately.
- Follows up via our EMR to assure all orders are completed by the patient and follow up as needed with the physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.
- Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; ordering, sorting and storing supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.
- Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency protocols; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.
- Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities that vary according to CMS and NM state laws, which may include medical/surgical asepsis, checking vital signs or mensuration's; physical examination preparations; clinical pharmacology; filling RX as prescribed by the providers and with verifications with physician's orders; minor surgery assists including rectal banding set up; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; therapeutic modalities; instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, Fibroscan procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; emergency triage, and first aid. Medical assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice.
- Take phone messages and provide feedback and answers promptly to patient/provider or other outside callers.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school graduate or GED
- Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited institution, preferred
- Certification as a Medical Assistant (RMA, CCMA, CMA)
- BLS certified
- Minimum one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a Medical Assistant.
- EMR and computer skills experience
