The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering at USD invites applications for faculty that can help the school develop stronger leadership and teaching capacity in artificial intelligence and/or data science (AI/DS). We seek candidates who have demonstrated expertise/experience in data science and/or artificial intelligence. We hope to minimally hire one senior faculty member and several early careers faculty members to teach topics in AI/DS and/or help in designing courses and programs, which can be in the context of any school undergraduate majors. Candidates should also be able and desirous to teach courses other than AI/DS within one of the SMSE majors.
For the Senior faculty position(s), we prefer candidates that have a faculty rank of associate or full professor and that are able to articulate a vision or an approach to developing a vision for artificial intelligence and or data science within a school context. The vision could be focused at one of the existing majors, a new major, a schoolwide thrust, a center vision, or within the broader university context. We also prefer candidates that have a desire and capability to lead/serve in a school administrative capacity in the future such as a center co-director, chair of a department, academic director of program or other school leadership position. Appointment could include an administrative role if desired.
For the early career faculty position(s), we prefer candidates that will hold the rank of assistant professor and who have demonstrated knowledge of AI/DS. We also will consider faculty who will hold a rank of a clinical faculty, such as a professor of practice (based on applied industry experience and expertise in the AI/DS). We also will consider faculty who will hold a rank of a clinical faculty (based on applied industry experience and expertise in the AI/DS).

Tenure-track faculty should expect to work closely with undergraduate students through teaching and major advising.

Successful candidates should meet the following criteria:
- Tenure-track faculty applicants should hold a doctorate degree in engineering, computer science, engineering or computer science education, or a related discipline by their start date at USD. See department-specific degree requirements above.
- Professor of practice (contract position) applicants should have at least 10 years of related experience and at least a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.
- Teaching clinical faculty (contract position) applicants should have at least 5 years of related experience and at least a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.
Posting Salary:
$80,000-$212,000 (depending on track and rank); Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
