JOB SUMMARY
A custodian at the San Antonio Children’s Museum is unique – it involves not only janitorial duties, but also serving as an ambassador of the museum by engaging the public, when needed, while working in public areas. Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor, this is a Seasonal, hourly, non-exempt position which will be paid based on the hours worked.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Clean museum galleries, public areas, restrooms, administrative offices, and storage areas.
- Serve as attendant during programs and rental events.
- Prepare all set ups with tables, chairs, and tablecloths as directed by set up diagram
- Assist with break down, cleaning and striking museum programs and events.
- Sweep/mop/wax floors, and operates other cleaning equipment, as needed.
- Perform proper techniques of floor care and preparation of areas to be cleaned, buffed, stripped or wax as well as carpet cleaning.
- Must be able to operate and maintain all floor cleaning/finishing equipment to include but not limited to floor buffer/burnishes, water extraction machine and carpet cleaning equipment.
- Assist in ordering supplies for custodial activities.
- Monitor condition of cleaning equipment and ensure that it is properly maintained and stored.
- Engage the public, when needed, while working in gallery areas or if asked for information.
- Ensure work is performed safely, according to the museum’s policies and guidelines.
- Work as a member of a dynamic team that fosters interdepartmental communication and relationships.
- Assist with other duties, as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Hands-on experience in custodial services, for 3 years preferred.
- Ability to communicate with staff, volunteers, visitors and vendors.
- Knowledge of cleaning equipment and supplies needed for projects.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, holidays, and weekends for events.
- Ability to communicate in English, as required for daily shifts and preferred for evening shifts.
- Access to reliable transportation to work, which is located north of downtown San Antonio.
- Ability to use a two-way radio.

- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds, unassisted
- Involves long periods of standing, walking, or sitting; frequent stooping, and bending.
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds and push cart with 60 pounds, with the assistance of a cart on a regular basis.
- Ability to work on tall ladders and lifts at varying heights.
- Interacts with children and guests in a positive manner.
