With 20+ physicians, 10 locations, and 130+ employees, HMU specializes in general urology for both men and women, as well as specialty areas such as incontinence, robotic and laparoscopic surgery, management of kidney stone disease, cancer treatment of the genitourinary organs, and more.
HMU is seeking a Specimen Accessioner OR Lab Aide to join our lab team. Our growing lab is a part of the leading urology group in Houston, Texas. Our lab specializes in PSA, Testosterone, SHBG, and urine culture Microbiology on the Clinical Side, and processes various urology-related tissue (mostly prostate biopsies but also, bladder, vas deferens, and testicles) and urine for cytology and/or FISH on the Anatomical Pathology side.
Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for the following:
- Process all specimens that are received in the laboratory, tasks include time stamping requisitions, checking in on log sheets, and checking insurance
- Place specimens to be sent out to reference laboratory in appropriate lock boxes (fill out send out log).
- Prepare and print Micro worksheets.
- Enter specimen data into AP Easy (Accession/Demographics – Chemistry).
- Prepare samples for further laboratory analysis (plating).
- Pick up specimens at the Surgery Center.
- Check insurance, MRN, and accession AP cases.
- Prepare send outs for ancillary testing or second opinions, etc.
- Check in returned blocks and slides into AP Easy Send Out Log.
- File paper work, returned blocks and slides in correct storage locations.
- Transcribe AP reports for pathologist.
- Unpack and put away materials received and refrigerate supplies as needed (put received date on each item).
- Keep work area clean (wipe down counter tops and computer daily).
- Answer the phone to assist callers.
- Check AP Easy and print report then fax to office as needed.
- Assist in other lab duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required).
- 1-3 years of relevant Specimen collection/processing experience (Required).
