General Requirements:
- Ability to safely work from heights, up to 50’ in bucket truck or ladder
- Can access CAD drawings from the field and make digital annotations and revisions
- Can describe the division of labor among specialized OSP crews and has cross-trained on one or more of their disciplines
- Can demonstrate a high level of skill as a driver and operator of a Splicing Rig (aerial bucket truck and trailer)
- Can, with assistance, complete certain tasks such as
- Customer building entrances
- Move storage on a span
- Hang a drop from an aerial capsule, attach to customer building
- Operate aerial wire lasher
- Direct bury a cable without requiring restoration work
- Set up a lane closure when an arrow board is not required
- Is able to identify, and articulate field problems that are beyond the capacity of any 1- or 2-person splice crew.
Prospective employees for this position must meet "medium" strength level standards per U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Federal Standards, which requires an employee to be able to carry up to 50 pounds.
Prospective employees for this position are required to handle ladders and operate other equipment. Employees who have a body weight of over 250 pounds are not eligible for employment in this position at ACD. Buckets and ladders are rated for 300 pounds, which includes up to 250 pounds for the person and up to 50 pounds for tools.
Fiber Splicer Responsibilities:
- Has a basic understanding of fiber theory and network design
- Keeps excellent records of changes and new construction
- Keeps vehicles well stocked and ready for deployment
- Can retrieve Educational Materials and other resources from the Network directories
- Can operate all technical equipment for fusing and testing fiber
- Can complete a simple audit of a capsule
- Can adapt to improvements in the Data Management System
- Can publish a splice chart, OTDR report, and As-Built photos to the correct CMS & Network directories
- Can assist in an emergency
- Can be scheduled for on-call in a rotation schedule
- Is available for out-of-town/overnight work
