General Counsel
Downtown Development Group & Goodman Family Office
LOCATION: Portland, OR
COMPANY: Unique opportunity to serve as General Counsel (“GC”) for Downtown Development Group (“DDG”), the Goodman family’s commercial real estate investment/management company and family office. The family owns ~55 properties mostly throughout the Portland area and is in its fourth generation of ownership. DDG real estate assets include apartments, industrial, office, retail, development sites, as well as parking facilities. Dynamic, close-knit office with strong ties to the Portland community – this role will provide opportunities for civic involvement depending on candidate’s areas of interest/philanthropy. The GC will be a key member of the executive management team. DDG has very low leverage, is well capitalized, and is always actively seeking new investment opportunities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform legal work associated with company leasing, transaction work, risk mitigation, general contracts, as well as other real estate areas.
- Work closely with executive team to provide counsel on operating company and advise on key strategic decisions.
- Cultivate strong relationships with Goodman family and provide counsel on family-office related work as qualified.
- Manage 3rd party attorneys on legal items being outsourced that are beyond GC’s capabilities.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of real estate property law, including networking with other GCs and attorneys to recommend and refine best practices.
- Seek continuing education to supplement existing legal areas of expertise with additional ones that would benefit DDG and the Goodman family.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to thoughtfully evaluate and draft legal agreements with a high attention to detail.
- Ability to use entrepreneurial skills and superior critical thinking to shape role to best serve company and its principles.
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships both internally and externally.
- Ability to communicate clearly via phone, in-person and email, with people of various backgrounds and experience levels both internally and externally.
- Ability to thrive in dynamic office that requires trust and strong working relationships.
- Ability to be both direct and firm as well as diplomatic; strong negotiating and communication skills.
- Ability to proficiently use Microsoft Office Suite.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Oregon State Bar membership and JD, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in real estate law.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
- 4 day per week job with additional potential flexibility.
