Position Summary
Espresso Yourself Book Café is seeking a friendly, energetic, and customer-focused Barista to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for our zero-waste mission, making exceptional coffee, and a commitment to providing exceptional customer service. The Barista will be responsible for preparing and serving a variety of coffee drinks, teas, and other beverages, pastries, and light food offerings. This role involves interacting with customers, maintaining a clean and organized workspace, and contributing to a positive team environment. Lastly, the Barista should possess basic math skills for handling cash and processing transactions.
The expected work schedule for this position is Thursday and Saturday from 8am to 3pm and occasionally Friday. Depending upon this individual schedule they may be expected to work holidays.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
Primary focus of the Barista includes but are not limited to the following:
Customer Service:

Greet customers with a warm, friendly attitude.

Take customer orders accurately and efficiently.

Answer questions about menu items, ingredients, and brewing methods.

Provide recommendations based on customer preferences.
Drink Preparation:

Prepare and service a variety of coffee and non-coffee drinks.

Customize beverages based on customer requests.
-
Ensure drink consistency and quality.
Food Preparation:

Prepare and service select food items and pastries.
-
Handle food safely and hygienically.
Operations:

Operate coffee brewing equipment and other machinery (espresso machines, grinders, blenders, etc.)

Maintain a clean and organized work area, including counters, equipment, and seating areas.

Wash and sanitize dishes as needed throughout the day.

Restock supplies and inventory as needed by communicating with the café director.

Follow health, safety, and sanitation guidelines for all products.
Cash Handling:

Process payments accurately using the point of sales (POS) system.

Handle cash, credit card transactions, and tips efficiently.

Balance the cash register at the end of the shift.
Team Collaboration:

Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth café operations.

Assist in training new staff as needed.

Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for improving service and operations.
Other duties as assigned.
Ideally, a candidate will have previous experience as a barista or in a customer service role and possess a positive, can-do attitude with a passion for coffee and community building. This individual should also have a familiarity with coffee brewing equipment and techniques. Excellent customer service and communications, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, is required. Experience and demonstrated success working with diverse student communities is preferred, but not required. Lastly, the Barista is frequently required to stand for extended periods of time and be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
