Position Overview
Our Lab Technicians play a crucial role in our laboratory operations, focusing on the accurate and efficient execution of DNA library preparation and sequencing. Lab Technicians are responsible for preparing samples, operating sequencing equipment, and ensuring the integrity of data.
Key Responsibilities
Sample Preparation:
- Prepare DNA samples for sequencing using established protocols and molecular biology lab techniques
- Open received packages; log in samples to website; identify and resolve issues with packages
- Load samples into trays for processing
- Make minor adjustments in reagent combinations and quantities to ensure high-quality and quantity DNA samples for sequencing
Instrument Operation:
- Operate instruments, including DNA sequencing instruments, liquid handling instruments, and similar technologies
- Load samples into robotic units and adjust settings for appropriate processing of the DNA samples
- Monitor instrument performance, troubleshoot issues and perform routine adjustments for optimal functionality
Results Analysis:
- Review sequencing output to confirm normal operation and valid results
- Implement quality control measures to assess the integrity and purity of DNA samples
- Verify the accuracy of sample information and maintain meticulous records of experimental details
Data Analysis:
- Perform basic data analysis, including initial assessment of sequencing results and troubleshooting of any anomalies
- Work closely with bioinformaticians to transfer raw data and assist in the interpretation of sequencing outcomes
Compliance and Documentation:
- Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and maintain compliance with relevant regulations and standards
- Document all experimental procedures, observations, and results accurately
Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate with other lab technicians, scientists, and researchers to achieve common research goals
- Assist with lab organization (tracking reagent orders, preparing aliquots, etc.)
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of lab processes
- Any other functions or projects, as the needs and interests arise, as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with DNA extraction, purification, and/or sequencing techniques strongly preferred
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently
- Proficient in basic laboratory techniques and good laboratory practices
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work in a collaborative team environment
- Physical requirements include: Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to frequently lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and inventory in the lab. Requires substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Requires close visual acuity to perform an activities such as: pipetting; viewing a computer terminal; preparing and analyzing data and figures.
