Annual Salary: $57,219.78 - $73,990.59
POSITION SUMMARY
Perform enforcement of Massachusetts Building Code and local zoning ordinances. Conduct inspections of new and existing construction for conformance with applicable laws. Examine and may approve plans and specifications for new building and for repairs and alterations of existing buildings. Perform all duties required to inspect and permit construction work. Issue permits for installation, alteration, repair and construction. Investigate complaints of violations and record findings. Record keeping and other related duties may be assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS and DUTIES
· Receive and review applications for building permits for compliance with State Building Code.
· Assist the public, applicants, architects and engineers on issues relating to building and code inspections.
· Examine plans for building construction, alteration, or repair and approve issuance of permit, subject to review and approval by Director of Inspectional Services.
· Inspect buildings under construction or repair for conformity with approved plans and structural requirements.
· Periodically inspect places of assembly, such as schools, churches and restaurants for compliance with state and local statutes.
· Work closely with other land use departments such as Planning and Development, Department of Public Works and the Assessor’s office.
· Assist the Director of Inspectional Services with the enforcement of local and state statutes.
· May represent the Director of Inspectional Services at public meetings, or in the office if needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Minimum five (5) years of related experience in the supervision of building construction or design, or in the alternative, a two (2) year associates degree in Engineering related to building construction or design, or an equivalent combination of education and experience approved by the board of Building regulations and Standards.
· Nationally certified Local Building Inspector license-holder strongly preferred.
· In lieu of already holding a license, Candidate must apply to the Board of Building Regulations and Standards for acceptance, and must be tested and attain passing scores in all three examinations required for certification within 6 months of hire date.
· Candidate must maintain this certification through continuing education.
· Demonstrated general knowledge of the accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation and safe exits.
· General knowledge of other equipment and materials essential for safety of a building or structure.
· Proficiency in computer software such as Microsoft office Suite, including Word and Excel, and online permitting system.
· Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License required.
