Job Purpose
The Controller is responsible for providing overall financial management and accounting operations needed to support Mission Capital’s mission.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Core Bookkeeping & Accounting (40%)
- Ensure accuracy and transparency of the general ledger, perform all aspects of bookkeeping, AP/AR, and monthly close activities (including journal entries, issuing and tracking invoices, Bill.com vendor setup and payments, bank reconciliations)
- Payroll processing, expense reimbursements (Expensify), payroll allocation by program, PTO management, 401k retirement plan
- Accounting of restricted grants (ensure documentation of grant/pledge purpose, tracking of restrictions, cash timing)
- Accounting for earned revenue (fee-for-service) contracts, manage deferred revenue
- Ensure effective internal controls, and maintain the confidentiality of all supporting documentation related to financial activities
- Ensure 1099s, W2s and other quarterly and annually required filings are completed, in partnership with vendors (ADP, Jitasa)
Financial Management (40%)
- Prepare and communicate financial statements in a concise and timely manner
- Monitor cash flow and ensure cash management needs are met
- Oversee budgeting and forecasting processes with staff and board, keep stakeholders abreast of key financial matters
- Oversee the annual financial audit and 990 process
- Work with Development and Programs to develop grant budgets and financials
- Work closely with the Executive Director and across Mission Capital to ensure understanding of the organization’s financial activities, and provide guidance towards an evolving sustainable financial model
- Act as the primary staff liaison with the Board Treasurer, and present key financial matters to Finance Committee, Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and MC Staff
- Manage agreements and relationships with related vendors (auditors, accounting firms, banks, benefits providers, service providers)
- In partnership with other MC staff, seek continuous improvement in financial policies, systems, and processes
Organizational Leadership (10%)
- Operate as part of the leadership team, and collaborate with Mission Capital leaders and staff to guide organizational and operational strategy
- Anticipate, manage, and solve problems deliberately and decisively so Mission Capital is internally and externally successful.
- Model and nurture an organizational culture of deep trust and belonging, excellence, authentic and courageous leadership, and mutual accountability.
- Support Mission Capital staff and board as we center equity in our relationships, work, and decision-making, by supporting our internal learning and capacity to be “equity equipped” at a personal, interpersonal, organizational and systems level.
Operations & HR (5%)
- Serve as the finance / accounting resource for Salesforce and other business processes
- Orient new hires to finance administrative procedures
- Work with insurance / benefits providers
- Actively participate in the creation of a positive work culture by serving as a trusted liaison between staff and leadership regarding issues that affect employee satisfaction
- Maintain, file, and ensure the confidentiality of all employee records
Mission Capital General Support Thought Partnership (5%)
- Participate as a full member of Mission Capital’s team, adhere to core values, attend staff meetings, participate at Mission Capital events, and coordinate collaborative activities with other departments as needed.
- Deliver presentations to community and other groups on Mission Capital’s thought leadership topics as requested.
- Participate in professional groups related to work/position and stay current on industry and sector trends.
- Blog and contribute to thought leadership as assigned.
Race, Equity and Belonging
- In alignment with our strategic plan, participate in the building of a ”race, equity & belonging (REB)” culture across all MC departments and teams.
- Work with the Inclusion Council and participate in internal race, equity and belonging activities such as collective equity work sessions and affinity groups to embed and center race equity in both internal and external programming.
- Apply a race equity lens and embed equity in all essential job duties and responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or relevant field.
- Minimum 7 years’ work experience in finance, accounting, or similarly related roles; with at least 3 years at a nonprofit with experience tracking and accounting for restricted grants and earned revenue across multiple program areas, and allocating shared costs
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel and Outlook) and accounting software (preferably QuickBooks Online). Preferably overall tech savvy
- Experiences demonstrate key work skills above – detailed, organized, accountable, adaptable, lifetime learner, collaborative, effective communicator
Additional Information
Reports To: This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer

Position Status: This is a full-time, exempt position
Virtual Office: Mission Capital currently operates in a remote/virtual office setting This position will also work remotely with occasional in-person work support events in Central Texas (assumes 1-2 times a month) and participating in All-Staff and team meetings throughout the year (assumes 4 times a year). This position will need to be based in Central Texas as in-person events support and administration will be required 1-2 times a month in Central Texas.
Salary: The salary range for this position is $70,000 - $90,000 annually and is negotiable depending on experience.

This is not an interview but an opportunity to learn more about our journey and to ask questions of our team.
