POSITION TITLE: Surgery Operations Technician
DEPARTMENT: Nursing Service
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for the direct patient care within the Operating Room under the supervision of the registered nurse. Follows departmental standards,
policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.
The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.
1. Performs surgical hand scrub, sets up back table and Mayo stand for
handling instruments and assisting surgeon during surgical cases
assigned.
2. Ensures that the use of sterile asepsis during surgical procedures
are maintained.
3. Follows departmental policies for decontamination of surgical suites
at the beginning, between and on completion of surgical cases during
the shift.
4. Assists in decontamination, disinfecting and/or sterilization of all
instrumentation and equipment.
5. Ensures adequate supplies are available to complete anticipated
caseload during course of the shift.
6. Transports patients, supplies and specimens as directed.
7. Works in harmonious manner with team members.
8. Delivers care according to hospital and departmental policies,
procedures and philosophies.
9. Practices positive customer relations techniques.
10. Respects patients’ privacy, rights and values and provides care
accordingly.
11. Attends educational offerings. Must maintain minimum of 16 contact
hours annually.
12. Assists in re-stocking and ordering supplies for the Operating Room
suites and warmers.
13. Follows safety and infection control policies and procedures within
the department.
14. Attends unit meetings.
15. Assists in orienting new employees.
16. Participates in hospital wide, interdisciplinary CQI process as
directed.
17. Takes responsibility for specific projects which will ensure
compliance to standards of environment of care, management
information, care of patients and infection control.
18. Completes all annual competencies for assigned areas of
responsibility.
19. Demonstrates excellence in customer service skills.
20. Fosters an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
21. Participates in quality improvement activities including serving on
quality improvement teams.
22. Performs other related duties as required.
23. Complies with Corporate Policies, Departmental Policies and
Procedures and Employee Handbook.
24. Cross-trains to other areas as assigned.
25. Cleans and processes instruments for sterile use.
26. Operates equipment such as sterilizers and distillery.
27. Maintains work area in a manner according to the hospital policies and procedures.
28. Develops and maintains accurate instrument tray logs and a picture gallery of surgical trays and instruments housed in each tray.
29. Maintains current educational standards and abides by the current AAMI standards.
30. Develops a cross training program for the Central Sterile Tech. role.
31. Maintains accurate sterilization logs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.
EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:
High school education. Graduate of accredited surgical technology program or equivalent experience required. Certified ORT preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
One year OR tech. preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Demonstrates the ability to learn techniques and procedures and accurately perform them. Must be able to maintain good working relationship with co-workers, patients, and the public. Must possess the ability to use varied equipment and instrumentation. Must demonstrate the ability to meet the special needs of all patients including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, and geriatrics. Must be able to cope with highly stressful situations and set priorities for multiple tasks. If on call, must be able to report to duty within 20 minutes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to withstand long periods of standing. Must be able to walk, lift and assist in the transporting of patients. Must be able to work in areas where cleaning and disinfecting chemicals are used. Must demonstrate visual and aural acuity. Must demonstrate manual dexterity to manipulate instruments and equipment.
