Flight Nurse
AirCare Alaska specializes in Medevac services and is based out of Fairbanks, Alaska. AirCare Alaska is looking for Flight Nurses to provide high quality fixed wing air ambulance transportation from rural Alaska to higher levels of care as well as interfacility air ambulance transport. We are hiring for both our Fairbanks and Kotzebue bases.
Compensation Range: $80,000-$120,000
Actual compensation will be influenced by several factors including specific skills, years of experience, and demonstrated performance in a similar role.
Full-Time Position (2 weeks on / 2 weeks off rotation)
This is an “on-call” position and will be required to be available 24 hours a day during the established 2 week “on” rotation.
Job Description
AirCare Alaska is seeking skilled Flight Nurses to provide high quality critical care including assessment, triage, and treatment utilizing standards and guidelines established by AirCare Alaska. The Flight Nurse will assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize the care needed for safe transport of the critically ill or injured patient to the appropriate facility; is qualified to provide care for patients across the life span in his/her assigned clinical area; is responsible for carrying out the mission and goals of AirCare Alaska to ensure that safety remains the highest priority throughout the transport continuum.
Job Duties
· Provides critical care from the initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility.
· Evaluating the condition of critically ill or injured patients upon flight arrival and commencing with appropriate treatment.
· Performing advanced critical care interventions and monitoring vitals throughout the flight.
· Maintains thorough patient care documentation.
· Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing continuing medical education.
· Communicating with dispatch staff and the healthcare providers assisting patients onsite.
· Practices at the level of care within the scope of practice as defines by the State of Alaska.
· Keep accurate inventory of medical supplies, instruments, and medication, as well as replenishing stock on the aircraft.
· Keeps aircraft clean and orderly to ensure rapid response to all transport requests.
· Following in-flight protocols and performing pilot assistance duties as needed to ensure safe and timely arrival.
· Maintains documentation of required licensure, certifications continuing education, aviation and safety training, OSHA and HIPPA training, clinical rotations and advanced procedure training.
· Attends staff meetings and departmental outreach programs.
· Maintains positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, EMS representatives, hospitals and the public.
Job Requirements
· Alaska RN license
· Minimum three (3) years experience as a Critical Care, Trauma, or Emergency Nurse. Flight experience preferred.
· Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC certifications are required at time of hire.
· CFRN, CCRN, CEN, CPEN and/or CTRN certifications are highly desirable.
· BCEN specialty certification, CFRN or CTRN required within Two (2) years of hire.
· NRP and STABLE within 6 months of hire.
Competencies
· Ability to utilize advanced practice skills to accurately evaluate, treat, and monitor critically ill patients under pressure.
· Ability to administer medicine and provide advanced life support in a confined and noisy space.
· Ability to monitor medical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
· Exceptional ability to relay ETAs, patient condition, and intervention details to awaiting medical staff.
· Knowledge of flight protocols and safety procedures.
· Proficiency in keeping up with advancements in the field of in-flight trauma nursing.
· Excellent interpersonal, communication, and recordkeeping skills.
· Orientation typically ranges between 1-2 months.
· Survival training for environmental extremes will be provided.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
· Maximum body weight - 300 pounds with all flight gear.
· Able to carry equipment over a variety of terrain without assistance.
· Able to lift, carry, push, and pull 50+ pounds.
· Able to perform CPR for extended periods of time.
· Must be able to work in a highly dynamic environment with exposure to noise, vibration, and weather extremes. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions; and is frequently exposed to blood-borne pathogens or airborne particles, fumes and gases, electrical and chemical hazards, and vibrations/turbulence.
· Pre-employment physical and drug screen will be required prior to employment.
· The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, requiring hearing protection while in-flight, and at a moderate level when in the hospital environment. Pre-employment and annual audiograms are recommended to monitor for hearing loss. Noise attenuation devices will be provided to all employees, but it is the employee’s responsibility to utilize these devices to prevent hearing loss.
