The Lab Supervisor is a coach, mentor, and facilitator for the laboratory. The Lab Supervisor aides in bench work and maintenance of procedures for testing raw material and finished products; organizes and promotes laboratory improvement efforts; establishes and maintains a record keeping system that follows plant, state, and federal record keeping requirements. In addition, the Lab Supervisor develops reports to measure product compliance and drives cost improvement. This position represents the organization when dealing with customers and regulatory agencies. As a result, he or she must have sound written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with individuals and organizations. This individual will be expected to actively participate with the team and assist in creating a positive work environment.
- Assists in the training and execution of testing procedures
- Assists in bench work and equipment calibration (approximately 50% of work time)
- Assists in the review and submission of sample testing.
- Ensures all Chemistry procedures are followed and performed accurately
- Ensures all basic and Advanced Micro is performed accurately
- Ensures the results reported are accurate
- Ensures all testing of both in-process and finished product is performed in a timely manner.
- Assists in the Maintenance and Review of Laboratory Quality Programs
- Assists in the execution of the Internal Auditing Program.
- Creates and maintains work schedules for Laboratory Analysts
- Assists in the coordination of the repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment
- Assists in the maintenance of testing to ensure time maintenance
- Works to improve workflow and efficiency in the lab
- Maintains Production and Laboratory records in accordance to regulatory agencies requirements
- Assists in laboratory training (Good Lab Practices) program
- Ensures compliance to safety programs by Laboratory personnel
- Solicits ideas from employees regarding the improvement of safe work environment
- Communicates safety issues/concerns to Safety Coordinator
- Leads, Facilitates, Coaches, Mentors, and Develops
- Solicits new ideas from employees
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license, proof of liability insurance, and maintain an acceptable Department of Motor Vehicle record in accordance with company insurance requirements.
- Ability to drive from one location to another throughout work week.
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
- Preferred: Bachelors Degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Dairy Science, Food Science or related field
- Required: 5 years experience in a dairy testing lab
- Required: 3 to 5 years of technical experience
- Required: 3 years experience managing personnel and complex activities
- Advanced skills: Microbiological, Computer Skills, Excel and Access, and internal auditing.
- Advanced skills in Equipment Maintenance for Kjeltech, Foss equipment, HPLC, as well as standard laboratory equipment
- Advanced Analytical skill in areas such as HPLC, Atomic Absorption aside from Basic laboratory procedures
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Effective prioritizing, organizing, and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible, execute plans, strategies and achieve desired results
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to achieve defined goals on time
- Experience solving problems, analyzing information, highlighting relevant information and suggesting appropriate actions
- Adapts to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events
- Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner and gathers and analyzes information skillfully

- Strong self-started with little need for Supervision
- Must be able to operate all lab machines such as microwave ovens, 5 Hour ovens, Fume hood, Raw milk analytical testing equipment, Finished product analytical equipment, Microscope, pH meters, scales, and other standard dairy laboratory testing equipment.
- Must also be able to operator basic computer, phone, fax machine, calculator, and copy machine.
- Standing: Must be able to stand for long periods of time to perform necessary testing.
- Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Reaching: Extending hands and arms in any direction.
- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees occasionally.
- Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Subject to up to at least 92db’s on an occasional basis.
- Lifting: Able to lift up to 50lbs occasionally.
- Will require lifting, mobility and stamina to complete assignments.
