Akerman LLP, a top 100 U.S. law firm, is seeking an experienced Director of Employee Relations and Professional Development. Reporting to the firm's Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), this is an important position within the Human Resources department, responsible for maintaining and enhancing positive employee relations with all employees (attorneys and staff). The Director of Employee Relations and Professional Development serves as a trusted advisor and provides guidance, support, and expertise in the area of employee relations and staff management training.
Responsibilities include:
- Manages and resolves all employee relations issues (for both attorneys and staff) in a timely manner.
- Conducts workplace investigations, prepares investigative reports, makes recommendations for disciplinary action/termination, and conducts terminations if needed.
- Collaborates with the CHRO and the HR partner to find resolutions to more complex HR issues.
- Seeks proactive legal advice from the internal HR partner on employment law and any potential risk to the firm.
- Excellent understanding of federal employment laws as well as local/state laws, including California, New York and Illinois state specific laws.
- Updates and maintains policies in all handbooks (both attorney and staff handbooks).
- Researches any new applicable employment laws. Incorporates any new laws within the policies and procedures and successfully rolls out to the field.
- Potentially mentors or manages other HR professionals within the department, if needed.
- Trains newly promoted staff managers on how to conduct successful one-on-one meetings and how to build trust with employees.
- Trains local Office Administrators on HR related management topics, including FMLA and ADA compliance.
- Coaches managers on positive management practices, including proactive communication with their staff to create a productive and harmonious work environment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Strong knowledge of federal and state labor laws, employment regulations, and best practices in employee relations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee information discreetly and professionally.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with employees and management.
- Ability to compile, research, and analyze information.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software (HRIS).
- Excellent time management skills, and the ability to handle multiple employee investigations at one time.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources; Master’s degree preferred
- At least ten years of related experience required
- SHRM-SCP or SPHR preferred
