POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Art Instructor/Art Therapist DEPARTMENT: Resident Services
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Resident Services
JOB SUMMARY: The art instructor/therapist works in our community instructing residents in the basic principles of art and elements of design. The instructor will assist residents, assess artwork to support a resident’s progress, encourage creativity, teach techniques in a variety of mediums and provide appropriate adaptations based on the resident’s needs.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, LICENSURE:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent work experience required.
2. Previous work experience preferred two (2) years involving organized group activities with a senior living audience
3. Art therapist licensed preferred
4. Computer skills & knowledge of current technology.
5. An education in the visual arts or art education preferred.

5. Required to be able to complete the initial Covid Vaccine series within 30 days of employment.
6. Must attend annually mandatory in-services required by the State Licensure and all other mandatory in-services and/or meetings required by other regulatory agencies and/or by SVWC.
7. Follows and supports the policies and procedures established by SVWC.
8. Promote positive language and culture change understanding for all older adults.
9. Knowledge of art and different art genres in order to teach a range of art styles.
10. Ability to communicate concrete and abstract concepts to participants.
11. Ability to spot and cultivate creativity
12. Ability to provide appropriate physical and cognitive adaptations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Insure implementation of SVWC activities program policies and procedures.
2. Responsible for transporting residents to and from activities, encouraging and reminding residents of scheduled activities 30 minutes prior to the activity.
3. Lead group/individual activities of the program.
4. Monitor and document participation in each individual and group activity.
5. Maintain accurate participant records in accordance with licensing standards and regulations.
6. Participate in and complete documentation for Care Plans, Minimum Data Sets and Individual Service Plans.
7. Attend and assist with group outings.
8. Assist with the coordination of needed volunteers.
9. Responsible for following policies and procedures relating to the safety of participants and staff. Oversees the safety of the residents.
10. Advocate for safety and protection of all participants.
11. Practice effective communication techniques with participants, families and co-workers.
12. Respect participant rights (e.g. address participant by name, allow participant to make decisions, etc.)
13. Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of individual and group activities.
14. Keep equipment, supplies, and participant furniture clean.
15. Keep environment clean. Report housekeeping and maintenance needs.
16. Inform Director of Resident Services concerning psychosocial needs/approaches related to the residents or families.
17. Report to Director of Resident Services changes in participant status, resident’s responses to programming, equipment and supply needs, repair/maintenance needs, safety hazards, unusual occurrences or observations, problems with completion of assignments or scheduling.
18. Direct participant and family complaints to Director of Resident Services.
19. Responsible for developing activity calendar monthly and submit to Director of Resident Services and activities coordinators for review.
20. Responsible for keeping activity storage areas organized.
21. Performs other duties as assigned.
22. Promote positive language and culture change understanding for persons living with dementia.
23. Consult with residents to discuss their medical histories and identify the problems or conditions that they wish to overcome.
24. Conduct art therapy sessions with residents using various types of visual art including but not limited to drawing, sculpting, painting, ceramics and clay
25. Discuss residents artwork with them to evaluate the meaning and emotions behind the artwork
26. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to develop or integrate person-centered plans of care
27. Develop suitable art therapy programs for all residents based on needs, objectives and ability
28. Teach residents coping skills and strategies to enable them to deal with challenging and traumatic experiences
29. Conduct group or family art therapy sessions
30. Maintain detailed records of residents progress as well as observations
31. Need to have a passion for art
32. Need to be patient, empathetic and creative
33. Need to have a sound knowledge of visual art

VISION
Must be able to visually identify and discern printed words on either typewritten pages or computer screen.

LIFTING
- Must be able to bend, reach and lift patients with assistance to transport them to stretchers/wheelchairs.
- Heavy lifting required (over 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds repetitively from ground level to shoulder height)
- Must be able to push and maneuver carts/stretchers/space saver loaded with weights of 200 pounds.
SPEECH
- Must be able to verbally communicate in the English language directly and over the telephone and be understood.
RANGE OF MOTION
- Must have mobility for all parts of the body, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching above head and use of hands.
- Must be able to stand and/or mobilize by walking for majority of an 8-hour shift.
- Some tasks may require sitting for part of the workday.
- Must have manual dexterity, fine motor skills (typing, computer, etc.)
