A Cognia/SACS accredited national 100% online middle & high school is seeking a teacher certified in teaching German, grades 6-12. You would work from a set curriculum (PowerSpeak); this curriculum offers two years of middle school German, and two years of high school German.
Qualifications for applicants:
- Must be certified to teach German for grades 6-12
- Previous online teaching experience is a plus
- Need some daytime availability to work with school class schedule
- Solid technical ability required
The PowerSpeak online curriculum enables students to listen to the language and record their speaking of it for the teacher to review (in addition to reading, writing, and culture lessons). Teachers also schedule some one-on-one webcam sessions with the students, as well as grade student work.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring that your students are gaining the knowledge and skills they need through the courses
- Assisting students in a timely manner (within 24 hours M-F) with any questions they have or help they need in understanding the material
- Contacting each student no less than twice per month (once by email, once by live method), but since this is a language learning course, higher frequency will likely be necessary
- All students are required to do a one-on-one video exam review with the teacher before they take each quarterly exam. This is probably the most time-consuming aspect of the job. The majority of students' prime availability is afternoons and evenings.
- Grading assignments within 24 hours (M-F)
- Alerting the administration to any student, curriculum, or technical issues
Although this is a part-time job, the teacher is expected to be available to help students at intervals throughout the day. Therefore, this job is not a good fit for someone who has a full-time day job with few open slots during the day or other commitments which limit availability.
You will be required to keep tabs on the performance of all your students: Are they logging in regularly? Are they keeping pace with their needed progress? You will need to monitor how they are doing on assignments to be aware of any indications that they are not grasping the material, and contacting anyone who is struggling. You will also need to grade written and spoken assignments. You need to be available to students who contact you for assistance on understanding material.
The curriculum, including all assignments, is already there, so you do not have any lesson preparation. You will be expected to become familiar enough with the curriculum that you can knowledgeably assist the students.
This position begins immediately. Our school is open for students 365 days a year, and the teacher is expected to work all weekdays, except there is a 1 week (paid) break between Christmas and New Year's, and federal holidays are paid. You will work from your home. The number of hours per month depends on how many students you have and how much help they need. An estimation of the hours needed based on current student load is 20 to 35 per month (not per week -- per month). You should expect to log in no less than once every 12 hours (Monday - Friday) and assist any students needing help at that time.
If this position interests you, please submit a resume that includes information about your work experience, education (including degrees and majors), and specific teaching credentials, along with a message explaining why you are interested in teaching online in a situation as described above.
