JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Junior Staff Attorney works with the Director of the Barton Child Law and Policy Center (Barton Center) and Center faculty, staff, and students in support of the Center’s mission by fulfilling responsibilities for: (1) teaching and supervision of law students enrolled in one of the Center’s four clinics; (2) research and policy development; (3) professional education; (4) legislative advocacy; and (5) substantive child welfare legal work for the Center’s grant funded projects. The Junior Staff Attorney will also lead collaborations with community advocates, the legal and judicial community, and government partners and provide technical assistance to advance child welfare legal system reform efforts, with a priority focus on continuing the Center’s national work to promote and build capacity for preventive legal advocacy.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Advise on substantive child welfare law topics and making policy and practice recommendations as part of policy, advocacy, and system reform projects; formulate sophisticated advocacy strategies.
Give presentations and trainings on child welfare law and public policy topics, facilitate stakeholder groups and coalitions, design and deliver child welfare law content. Manage substantive projects.
Represent the Center in community settings and appear before the state legislature in a professional manner.
Develops and manages relationships with child welfare system stakeholders and advocates at and outside of Emory, at both the state and national levels.
Such participation in the community should be used to enhance the Senior Staff Attorney's independent professional development but is also expected to promote Emory and the clinic or center within the community.
Research and analyze laws, regulations, court rules, and policies; advise on policy development and advocacy strategies.
Alongside the clinic or center director, teach clinic students how to participate in policy development and advocacy and how to think about lawyering skills and challenges more generally.
Provides student attorneys with instruction, assignments, and written and oral feedback.
Shares responsibility with the clinic or center director for leading the weekly clinic meeting regarding the docket.
May supervise post-graduate fellows employed by the Barton Center.
Participate in decisions regarding which projects the Center will undertake, including how work will be allocated among faculty, students, and staff.
Assists the director with the operation of the clinic or center and administrative tasks as necessary.
Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

JD degree and licensed to practice law in the State of Georgia.
One year of experience to include legal practice, experience working on legal matters affiliated with the center or clinic, experience managing a clinic, and/or experience supervising a new lawyer or law students is preferred.
Must be current members of the GA bar.
