Full Job Description

The most important role of the preschool teacher is in serving the spiritual mission of SPLC in teaching the values and beliefs of SPLC to our students and their families and in shaping the message that our church presents to our community while providing appropriate education and care. Our values and beliefs are contained in our Constitution, By Laws, Resolutions and Statement of Faith and can be found on the SPLC website.

Provide a safe and nurturing environment for children that encourages their social, emotional, physical and intellectual development. Design and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum according to guidelines established by St Paul Lutheran Church, Texas Licensing Minimum Standards. Maintain positive relationships with parents/guardians, children, coworkers and clients.

SPLC Preschool has expected standards of conduct and dismissal may result from conduct in violation of those standards. Employees are provided a copy of, expected to be aware of, and to abide by SPLC’s Statement of Belief on Marriage and Sexuality and are subject to dismissal for engaging in behavior in violation of SPLC moral teachings.

Employment is subject to the terms and provisions of the SPLC Employee Handbook which is not a contract with the employee. Employment at St. Paul Lutheran Church is at will.

REQUIRED EXPECTATIONS

Interaction between Staff and Children

Interact frequently, appropriately and respectfully. Speak in a friendly, calm, soft, courteous manner within close proximity of the child.

Respect and observe children's interests. Intervene when needed to maintain safety. Enhance children's play with language, toys, and activities. Implement age appropriate curriculum according to the Curriculum Guidelines and Policy of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Communicate directly with each child at the child's level. Engage and communicate constructively with individual children during activities and routines. Take every opportunity to positively extend children's thinking and actions.

Be available and responsive to children's needs, questions, and requests. Encourage and model social behavior and expectations which are developmentally appropriate. Acknowledge feelings with sensitivity and demonstrate appropriate expression of emotions.

Practice positive discipline techniques in guiding children's behavior according to St Paul Lutheran Church’s Discipline & Guidance Policy Summary.

Parent/Guardian Communication

Acknowledge parents/guardians and all classroom visitors. Demonstrate a friendly, courteous, and professional demeanor.

Respond to parent/guardian comments and concerns with sensitivity, interest, and respect while maintaining confidentiality.

Share appropriate information with parents/guardians daily regarding the development and specific activities of the children in their care. Utilize appropriate written communication tools as assigned.

Plan and attend /classroom events and meetings.

Physical Environment, Health, Safety and Nutrition

Maintain and follow all safety and health rules of the Preschool. Be knowledgeable of and follow all the State of Texas Minimum Standards and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Complete appropriate paperwork (i.e., accidents, medication, and allergies).

Supervise children at all times by sight and sound. Demonstrate awareness of entire group while working with a small group or individuals. Know the number of children in your group and maintain ratios at all times. Maintain accurate attendance records throughout the day.

Encourage children to utilize appropriate health, safety and nutritional practices.

Keep environment and equipment safe, clean, and attractive. Encourage respect for classroom materials. Notify designated individual in advance when supplies are needed.

Assist in arrangement of space into clearly defined, well organized activity areas. Organize a variety of materials on low, open shelves for children to use independently.

Physical Demands

Follow state, federal and St Paul Lutheran Church guidelines including required health and safety training.

Ensure children's safety while performing the following job functions:

- Frequently lift, move, or hold children with a range of weight from 10 to 40 pounds. (Occasionally lift, move, or hold weight more than 40 pounds).

- Supervise and interact daily with children outdoors for extended periods in varied weather conditions.

- Demonstrate full range of motion to lift, reach, squat, climb, sit, and otherwise fully participate in activities.

- Respond immediately and appropriately to multiple or unexpected situations or emergencies.

- Maintain mental and physical alertness and an appropriate level of energy to perform essential job requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS (Must meet State requirements)

Must meet and maintain state requirements for education and annual training. Additional Preschool requirements may apply.

High School diploma/GED is required; CDA or College level classes preferred.

Be CPR, First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogen certified or obtain certification upon hire.

Complete all health screenings and required immunizations as set forth by Texas Child Care Licensing Standards.

Must be 18 years of age

Must meet state requirements for experience and have demonstrated interest and prior experience working with children.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $14.00 - $15.50 per hour
