The Psychiatric Rehab Educator conducts skills training groups, educational classes, recreational and leisure activities for all Rio Grande State Center patients including, forensic, patients with co-occurring psychiatric and substance diagnoses, IDD, etc. The person in this position will conduct independent studies (one on one instruction) and group as assigned, therapeutic program, write progress notes to report patient response to treatment and complete other departmental documentation and task requirements. May be required to rotate schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and perform duties as assigned. This person will also provide safety supervision during center activities and celebrations and complete other duties as assigned by their supervisor. This position works under the direct supervision of the Psychiatric Rehab Education program supervisor and the general supervision of the Psychology Program Manager. Employee actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Compliance with DSHS Immunization Policy required: serologic evidence of immunity to, or documented evidence of vaccination against, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox), Tdap, annual vaccination against influenza (and hepatitis B if applicable).
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Conducts psychosocial rehabilitation skills training groups and leisure activities for all patient
populations.
Instructs clients in therapeutic activities, such as arts, crafts, drama, music, printing, sewing, and
recreation; and provides feedback regarding clients’ progress.
Prepares materials for therapeutic activities, orders and maintains supplies, and maintains
rehabilitative services equipment.
Prepares reports and progress notes on clients’ attendance and their responses to treatments.
Maintains recreational facilities in therapeutic work areas.
Complete functional skills assessment on new admissions.
Provide transport patients as needed.
Complies with all CTD mandatory training requirements and participates in ongoing training to
maintain and develop skills.
Provide excellent customer service
Complies with all facility Continuous Quality Improvement programs (JCAHO, Medicare, ADA, etc.)
supporting positive growth in operations which are performed under applicable agency
regulations.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of therapeutic methods and techniques in the rehabilitative therapy area of specialization, and of mental illness and mental disabilities. Skill in the use of equipment, tools, and materials used in therapeutic service activities. Ability to provide rehabilitative therapy, to prepare concise reports, and to communicate effectively.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Initial Selection Criteria:
Bilingual English and Spanish
Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred.
Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
Preferred Criteria:
Experience in direct patient care work.
Knowledge of therapeutic methods and techniques in the rehabilitative therapy area of specialization and mental illness/disabilities
