The position is that of senior social worker for the Trauma Recovery PTSD Intensive Outpatient Program at the Menlo Park Division of VA Palo Alto Health Care System. The incumbent works primarily in the PTSD Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) but also provides coverage in the men's and women's residential Trauma Recovery Programs (TRP). The incumbent is able to make complex and independent clinical judgments as demonstrated by at least two years of specialized social work practice and is responsible to the Supervisory Social Worker of the Trauma Recovery Programs.
- FUNCTIONS OR SCOPE OF ASSIGNED DUTIES:
- The TRP/IOP Senior Social Worker performs specialized assessment, case management, treatment, and discharge planning for program clientele with PTSD and related comorbidities.
- Provides individual, group, and/or family psychotherapy (which includes evidence-based interventions) and advanced-level case management interventions used in the treatment of Veterans and active duty service members with PTSD and possible co-occurring polytrauma injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, substance use disorders, personality disorders, and other co-occurring conditions.
- Screening/Assessment- The incumbent independently performs assessment of patients for psychosocial needs.
- Diagnosis- Incumbent incorporates complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients.
- Treatment Planning/Goal Setting- The incumbent is responsible for working with the interdisciplinary treatment team to develop a treatment plan with the veteran based on their assessment, setting achievable treatment goals with the veteran/family.
- Referral to service providers- Throughout the course of treatment the social worker is the subject matter expert on VA and/or community resources.
- Crisis Intervention- In the event of a medical or psychiatric emergency, staff will follow the protocol of the program at this VA facility.
- The work of the Senior Social Worker involves intensive social work services requiring the exercise of mature professional judgment and the flexible use of a wide range of complex social work practice skills not typically required in routine social work interventions.
- The incumbent Senior Social Worker is a seasoned clinician with advanced clinical skills and knowledge in medical, psychiatric, geriatric, and rehabilitation specialties.
- The Senior Social Worker provides leadership, direction, orientation, coaching, in-service training, staff development, and continuing education programs for assigned social work staff.
- The incumbent embraces a continuous culture of safety for veterans, their families, visitors, and other employees.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: M-F 8:00 am - 4:30 pm or as determined by supervisor.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full-time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy of up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66
